PM's speech comment: Expert says businesses need improved Covid testing if we really 'must see people back in the office'

Boris Johnson’s party conference speech included the call: ‘We will and must see people back in the office’. With Covid-19 cases still climbing that is only safe if businesses introduce new antibody testing, says expert.
The Conservative Party Conference speech by Prime Minister Boris Johnson included a strong call for people to return to office life. However, a leading Covid vaccination expert, Dr Quinton Fivelman, PHD, says our towns and cities may not be ‘buzzing with life’ for long, as the PM hopes, if the return to work is too precipitous.

Dr Fivelman, Chief Scientific Officer at London Medical Laboratory, warns: 'The Prime Minister said: “As we come out of Covid, our towns and cities are going to be buzzing with life, because we know that a productive workforce needs the spur that only comes with face-to-face meetings and water cooler gossip.” However, this is precisely the productive spur that feeds the spread of the coronavirus.

‘We now believe that everyone’s antibody profile is as unique as their fingerprint. While it may be perfectly safe for the majority to return to work, that does not mean it is safe for everyone. At present, new Covid-19 cases are being reported at a rate of about 35,000 a day. Unfortunately, the UK’s vaccination programme has stalled somewhat, with rates regularly dropping below 100,000 doses a day – that’s lower than many EU countries. That means we are not over the worst of the pandemic yet.

‘A return to work at this time considerably increases the risk of more people catching the virus. Of course, the idea is that, having been double vaccinated, most people are protected from the worst effects of Covid-19 if they do catch it. However, our antibody testing has shown that everyone responds differently to vaccinations. Some people create a very effective immune response, while others fail to do so.

‘The Prime Minister said, "If young people are to learn on the job in ways that they always have and must, then we will and must see people back at the office." If we really must see people go back to the office, just when everything is in delicate balance, then businesses should consider introducing antibody checks on their staff to determine if the jab has not worked for some people.
Antibody testing will identify those staff who should not return to the office immediately because they have low or no antibodies. That doesn’t rule out their future return to the office. That’s because antibody testing can be used to identify who needs a booster shot. In addition, tests can be used in conjunction with new immune-boosting drugs designed to protect patients who fail to respond to the Covid vaccine or rapidly lose immunity. These new supplementary drugs contain monoclonal antibodies and are already in use in America, Europe and Asia.

‘The UK’s drug regulator has already approved the first monoclonal antibody treatment – Ronapreve – for the treatment and prevention of acute Covid-19 in adults.

‘For businesses and individuals, the new generation blood tests we offer are highly accurate, quick and simple to carry out, either at home or at a clinic.
