South West food scene to benefit, as FSB announces support initiative

  • FSB invites Bournemouth’s independent food business owners to join support events online
  • Ethnic food businesses make up the highest % of ethnic minority led SMEs in UK*
  • Urgent support needed for sector to survive and thrive

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is supporting small businesses in Bournemouth’s vibrant ethnic food scene with a programme of free video conference support events to help them survive and thrive in the new Covid-world, in June.

Experts will offer advice, support and tips about how to safely reopen after lockdown; how to trade effectively online; and how to generate new business. Three free live events take place on video conferencing on 22 June, 25 June and 30 June.

Arnab Dutt, FSB’s Chair for social value and inclusive growth, said:
“From kebab shops to Arabic restaurants and from Indian to European food specialists, Bournemouth’s ethnic food scene not only contributes hugely to the local economy, but adds an endless vibrancy and sense of place to our lives.

“We want to offer tools, expertise and knowledge-sharing to help Bournemouth’s independent food businesses survive this challenging time and help them to develop new opportunities.

“It’s a tough time for this sector, it will take hard work, ingenuity and dedication. Some may not survive – but we’ll do all we can to try and help limit that. Social value and inclusive growth contribute to the long-term wellbeing and resilience of individuals, communities and society in general.”
Bournemouth-based Sarah Ali Choudhury, an award-winning Indian food expert, entrepreneur and FSB's food policy lead, said:

"I’m looking forward to sharing practical and business tips, signposting to useful resources and answering questions that business owners really need at this time.”

A programme of bitesize internet-based events will invite Bournemouth based food businesses to share ideas and support to each other at this challenging time. People will also be able to ask questions to and gain expertise and advice from experts.
