Two skilled drivers from Yellow Buses will be carrying the hopes of the company when they take part in a national competition this weekend (31/8).

Marks Nobrega and Stuart White came first and second respectively in the local heats of the Bus Driver of the Year contest, held at the Yellows’ depot in Yeomans Way, Bournemouth earlier this year.

Both will now do battle with bus drivers from across the UK as they compete in the national finals at Blackpool on Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1.

The contest, which can trace its origins back to 1967, is regarded as the premier skills competition in the bus industry. Blackpool has been the venue for the national final since 1982.

Up to 100 drivers working for large and small operators will take part in theory and driving tests, designed to challenge the most skilful drivers.

Competitors will leave every two minutes on the three mile course, which incorporates some manoeuvring exercises followed by a circuit, in normal traffic, along the Promenade and Middle Walk.

Drivers are required to stop with precision at a number of bus stops, and marshals will be stationed around the course to judge drivers signalling, positioning etc.

David Squire, Yellow Buses’ Managing Director, said: “Marks and Stuart have already proved themselves as highly skilled drivers after taking part in the local heats of the contest.

“The hopes of the company now rest on their shoulders as they compete at the very highest level in the national contest. We wish them every success.”
