As September approaches, students will be preparing to return to university, travelling to various towns and cities across the UK, often with truckloads of stuff. For students and parents, looking to purchase a car ahead of the next academic year, the Westover Group, part of the UK’s largest network of motor dealerships, has recommended its top five best used cars for students.

The ŠKODA Citigo is an eco-friendly and economical choice, with a return of over 60pmg and sitting within the lowest insurance group, this vehicle is cheap to run and maintain. The 1.0 litre engine car was also rewarded the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety rating. The hatchback offers space for four, plus more luggage and boot space than is often expected with cars of this size, making the ŠKODA Citigo an ideal ‘back-to-uni’ partner.

Similarly, the Hyundai i10 offers drivers a spacious interior and a large boot. This five-door car gained four out of five stars in the Euro NCAO crash safety rating and comes with a warranty that covers the car for an unlimited number of miles over five years. Westover Group recommend the Hyundai i10 as a vehicle that will be perfect for the student years and beyond.

The Renault Twingo is also covered by a three year, or 60,000-mile warranty, that includes UK roadside assistance, offering parents peace of mind when waving their children off. The car offers a modern and spacious interior making the Renault Twingo a practical choice. This car uses two small petrol engines guaranteeing an affordable running cost.

For those who pack light and do not require as much luggage space, the Toyota Aygo is recommended by the Westover Group. With C02 emissions of less than 100g/km, this car is extremely cheap to run. For a small car, this vehicle is quiet on the motorway making it an ideal long-distance cruiser for those who have father to go. This car was also awarded four out of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety rating and comes with a five year or 100,000-mile warranty as standard as well as a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty that can be passed onto the next owner.

If looking for warranty cover, the Westover Group also recommended the Kia Picanto which comes with a seven year or 100,000-mile warranty which can be transferred to a subsequent owner if sold. Models with the 1.0 litre engine start in insurance group four, the fourth cheapest bracket, meaning this car will be cheap to fuel and keep on the road. The practical Kia Picanto makes the most of its small size and was rated four out of five stars in the Euro NCAO crash safety rating.

Andrew Dyer, Group Used Vehicle Inventory Manager Core Brands at Westover Group said: “Watching your children drive off is a gut-wrenching moment for any parent and as a motor dealership, we have the responsibility of ensuring we are selling solid cars to young drivers that fit their needs and requirements. Our team are equipped with the experience and knowledge to help parents and students choose a vehicle that is right for them, considering all aspects such as safety, size and cost to run.

“When looking to purchase a second-hand car it is always important to check out the documentation that accompanies the car before purchasing. Be sure to check for any damage or signs the vehicle has been in a collision as well as looking up the car history and MOT log.

“At Westover, we thoroughly assess every pre-owned model before it goes on sale, so that you can enjoy years of trouble-free motoring. As well as a comprehensive pre-sale service, we’ll also check the background of any used car, and won’t accept those that have a chequered history. Such high quality doesn’t mean a high cost, you’ll only ever pay a competitive price when buying an Approved Used vehicle from Westover Group - so you’ll receive peace of mind at the right price.”
