Salisbury’s very first Town Crier made his debut appearance at the Salisbury Carnival on Friday 19 October.

Town Crier Jef Hutchby – who was selected by the public earlier in the year at St. George’s Day - announced the popular Carnival on The Guildhall steps in the Market Place. Spectators also had the chance to see Jef in the illuminated procession, joining over 40 entries from across the Wessex Carnival Circuit alongside local community groups and businesses.

Local resident Jef, is known by many as the Event Director for Salisbury’s Park Run and is also a Police Officer within Wiltshire Police.

Asked how he felt about his first cry for the City Jef said, “I had a fantastic time at Salisbury Carnival. It was a pleasure to make my first appearance as Town Crier and look forward to making our lots of public announcements in the future”.

Salisbury City Councillor Jo Broom who initially proposed the idea of a Salisbury Town Crier to Councillors said, “I was delighted to see the Town Crier make his first appearance last week. The appointing of a Town Crier will no doubt make a positive addition to Salisbury.”
